Why pocket diapers?

Pocket diapers are amazingly simple and work so well! Pocket diapers are called such because they have a microfleece or suedecloth inside that touches your baby and pulls moisture away from their skin and a waterproof outer shell to protect against leaks. Then you stuff the inside of the pocket diaper with whatever absorbent material you like! That is the greatest part about pocket diapers! You can stuff them with an insert, a prefold or a diaper doubler. The beauty of a pocket diaper is that you can truly customize the diaper for your baby's absorbency needs. Is your baby a really heavy wetter? Then I would suggest getting some diaper doublers or using the hemp stuffins from happy heinys. The hemp inserts are amazingly absorbent - you will not be disappointed with them!

We offer Fuzzi Bunz pocket diapers and Happy Heinys pocket diapers and a variety of one size pocket diapers. All three are extremely popular and well loved. In our household we use all three styles of pocket diapers and just love them!

What is the advantage of having the microfleece/microsuede on the inside of the pocket diaper?

The major advantage of having the microfleece/microsuede on the inner part of the diaper is that it wicks away the moisture from your baby's skin so that the moisture is then absorbed into the insert. The major advantage of this is even less chance of your baby getting a diaper rash of any kind.

Closure choices on pocket diapers

There are two choices for closures on pocket diapers - either a snap system or a hook and loop closure/Aplix system (ie. velcro). There are pros and cons to both and it usually comes down to a personal preference. I know many parents who swear by one or the other, which is why I suggest getting some of both to try out before you invest in a full diapering system. Pocket diapers with aplix closures are great because you can adjust the closure fit just as easily as with a disposable diaper. The main complaint parents have about the Aplix closures are that when you put them in the wash, they can stick to other diapers. However, all of our Happy Heinys and Bumgenius pocket diapers come with laundering tabs that you fold over to prevent this very thing. Snap closures on pocket diapers offer a very adjustable fit since there are a number of different closures to choose from. The main complaint with snap closures on pocket diapers is that many who are new to cloth diapering find this style of pocket diaper a bit difficult to figure out. Although once you get the hang of it, they become much easier.

Are there any downfalls to using pocket diapers?

The only concern that some people have about pocket diapers is that they are slightly more expensive than other diapering systems. However, not only does this equate to approximately $2.00-3.00/diaper compared with AIO's, they are still MUCH less expensive than buying disposables. In my opinion, these are great diapers for the price because they are not only easy for you to use, but easy for grandparents, daycare providers or babysitters to use as well!
